Jerry’s oh Jerry’s, how wonderful you have been to me over the years. Jerry’s Sno Cones is probably Memphis’ best kept secret. Many of the locals know about it, but many others and out-of-towners do not. Tucked away in a neighborhood in Nutbush, Jerry’s is not in route for many people. However, you cannot miss it when passing by. It’s a bright pink building with a spinning ice-cream cone on top. It’s practically begging you to stop.
Jerry’s has a full menu, including burgers made with ground beef from Charlie’s Meat Market, Fried Pickles, milkshakes, and malts. However, their sno cones are what made them famous. I am not big on shaved ice, but Jerry’s makes it extra special somehow. I do not know how they do it, but the ice is perfectly soft enough to melt in your mouth yet stay solid. There is plenty of syrup, and they have every flavor under the sun.
My go-to flavor is Wedding Cake, which looks absolutely nothing like actual wedding cake in its crimson color. Yet, it’s as sweet and delicious as one, and from what I can tell, it is Jerry’s most popular flavor. This past time I was there, I switched it up and got a Dreamsicle. It was delicious, but not as good as the Wedding Cake. My brother prefers the Blue Raspberry and my sister loves the fruity flavors like Fuzzy Navel and Strawberry.
My favorite part about Jerry’s is their “Supreme” option. For just a little more, you can get french vanilla ice cream swirled up the middle. It’s a great addition to the Sno Cone, and makes it even more exciting. Once you try a sno cone with supreme, you never turn your head back. It’s ice cream and sno cone all the way. You can also get a “Creme” option, which has a sort of condensed milk/sweet cream on top.
Be prepared to stand in line and wait for your sno cone if you decide to try this place out. I have never been and it NOT be packed. Their order and pick-up system is a little disorganized, but it is worth the complication. Just accept now that you will have to wait to place your order and you may have to wait longer than normal to receive your sno cone.
Jerry’s Sno Cones does not have a website or any official social media connection. I think it adds to their charm. However, you can request to be their friend on Facebook for follow their fan club on Twitter. You can also find more reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon. I Love Memphis and Backbeat Memphis have also done great features on them.
