Blue Plate Cafe November 14, 2011

I cannot believe that I have been to Blue Plate Cafe about three times this year, and I have yet to write about it.  I finally realized this when meeting my dad and sister for breakfast while they were in town this past week.

Blue Plate Cafe is one of my favorite places to grab breakfast.  The food is consistently some of the best down-home, Southern comfort goodness in Memphis.  You immediately realize this when first sitting down at your table.  The menus are newspapers.  The history of the restaurant is on the front, along with some motivational material.  On the inside is their complete menu.

I always have a hard time deciding what to get when I eat here.  The omelets are great.  I have an obsession with pancakes, and they have a lot of choices.  Butter pecan waffles? Okay, maybe.  Guaranteed though, we always order biscuits and gravy to start.

image

The biscuits at Blue Plate Cafe are soft, buttery, and perfect.  They always come out hot and fresh.  Most times, I don’t like to smother them in gravy because they are so good by themselves.  However, sometimes you just need that good, heart-clogging warmth of southern gravy.  With or without the gravy, the biscuits cannot be missed.

This particular time I came in, I chose to order the Eggs Florentine, which is “spinach and poached egg on an english muffin covered in rich mornay sauce” with a side of fruit.

image

The Eggs Benedict was just as good as anything else I have ever eaten at Blue Plate.  The English muffin was toasted just perfectly, with the right combination of spinach, tomato, poached egg, and sauce.  My only wish is that Blue Plate offered fresh, cooked spinach instead of creamed spinach.  I think you would be able to taste the flavor of spinach better, and it would make the whole entree taste fresher.

I also love Blue Plate’s fruit cup, because it is more than just your ho-hum cantelope and honey dew melon.  In addition, they add strawberries and bananas.  I am also pretty sure it changes depending on the season.

The service at Blue Plate is pretty humorous if you are observant.  From my experiences, all of the older servers who are waiting tables because they are industry professionals, are always happy, friendly, polite, and glad to be there.  However the younger servers, who are in their teens or early twenties, always seem to be having a bad day.

Our server (I do not know her name. She never told us.) was one of the latter.  She looked about 18, and she acted as though I was ruining her day.  I watched her interact outside of our table, and she was mildly happy and laughing with her co-workers.  However, every time she walked up to a table, including ours, a giant scowl came over her face.  It seemed as though all of her customers were making her angry.  She was attentive and got us everything we needed, which was great, but she just did it with a terrible attitude.

Though you cannot help who you get as a server, I would suggest crossing your fingers and hoping for one of the ladies who has been waiting tables there for a while.

Overall, my experience at Blue Plate Cafe was great.  The food was amazing and comforting, as usual.  Ignoring our server, we had a great time.  Blue Plate is usually my go to spot for a Southern breakfast, so I am sure I will be back soon.

Blue Plate Cafe does not have a website or social media presence, but you can find more reviews at Yelp, Urbanspoon, Road Food, or Trip Advisor.  You can also find out how they ranked in I Love Memphis’ Breakfast Brackets.

City East Bagel November 9, 2011

My chance upon City East Bagel is a bit of a funny story. Last week, as I was sorting through all of the Groupons I have bought.  (I swear those things were designed for me: a sucker for good food and a good deal.)  I found mine for City East Bagel, that I completely forgot I had.  I immediately checked the expiration date, since obviously I have had it for so long that I forgot about it.  It turns out that the Groupon expired the very next day, aka the day I worked a full 8am-6pm day…and the place is only open from 7am-2pm.  After freaking out over losing a $40 Groupon, I gave it to Scott.  I instructed him to buy himself breakfast, get something To-Go for me for dinner, and spend the rest on whatever he felt like we could use.

I always knew he had good instinct.  He met me the next night, and told me that he had both the French Toast AND an omelet for breakfast.  He got me The Californian Sandwich, which is “Thin slices of turkey, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, swiss, and lite Italian dressing on toasted wheat bread,” with pasta salad. He then also presented me with a dozen bagels and four different kinds of cream cheese (plain, cinnamon, strawberry, and chive).  Wow, what an amount of food you can get from this place for 40 bucks!

image

As a disclaimer, I cannot give this place a complete review, as I did not dine in.  I can only report back about my food quality, but not service.

Scott said his breakfast was good, but nothing special.  My sandwich I thought was delicious.  It also has many of my favorite ingredients on it.  The pasta salad tasted fresh.  My only qualm with it was that there was sliced pickles in it.  I have never had pickles in pasta salad, and I was not really a fan.  The strong pickle taste overpowered the rest of the ingredients.

The bagels were also average.  I love bagels, and I have eaten most of the ones from this place.  However, they are nothing to brag about.  The plain and cinnamon cream cheeses were good, however the others I wasn’t to excited about.  The strawberry was too liquidy and the chive was too overpowering.

Also, I would not suggest buying this food unless you have the intention of eating it all that same day.  My food did not keep well.  I saved half of my sandwich for the next day, but it was spoiled when I went to eat it.  Also, the bagels turned stale in less than 24 hours.

All in all, this place gets an average rating.  If I am in the area, I might stop by and try something else off the menu.  However, the location and the hours are not convenient for me, and the food is not worth the drive.

Easter Bunny Brunch in Memphis! (Eggs and Scalloped Potatoes Included) April 21, 2011

Do you love celebrating Easter and spending time with friends and family? Is that pesky kitchen getting in the way of your quality time? (Hey! Roasting a lamb, plus preparing hard boiled eggs and scalloped potatoes takes a lot of time!) I thought so. Below is a list of local places to eat this Sunday, where you can spend quality Easter time with friends and family, minus the stove.

1.) The Grove Grill will be serving Easter brunch from 10:00am until 5:00pm. The menu will be a la carte, but will include items such as roast beef tenderloin, cinnamon croissant French toast, crab quiche, and oysters on the half shell.

2.) Jim’s Place will serve Easter brunch from 10:30pm until 2:30pm. Their menu will include pecan crusted catfish, deep fried oysters, roast leg of lamb, and mousaka.

3.) Grill 83 will also have Easter brunch, including banana stuffed French toast, smoked salmon, and leg of lamb. It’s a little bit fancy, and it costs $45.00 per adult and $15.00 per kid.

4.) Paulette’s will be serving up Easter brunch from 11:00am until 3:00pm. Their menu will include raspberry mimosas, Eggs Hussarde, omelets, crepes, and even crabcakes.

5.) The Peabody Hotel will be serving up their traditional Easter Brunch from 11:00am until 2:30pm. This is where my family has gone in years past, and I always looked forward to it as a kid! Their menu is endless.

6.) The Inn at Hunt Phelan‘s Easter brunch will include Crab Justine, Eggs Florentine, and roast leg of lamb. Also, every table gets a basket full of chocolate eggs!

7.) The Brooks Museum of Art will have Easter brunch from 11:00am until 2:30pm. Their menu will include Slow Roasted Leg of Lamb with Jalapeño-Mint Pesto, Sweet Pepper-Mustard Sauce, & Pickled Green Tomato Relish, Roasted Cornish Hen with Smoked Paprika Jus, and Steak & Eggs Benedict.

The Beauty Shop April 3, 2011

The Beauty Shop is where I ended my birthday weekend on Sunday morning for brunch. As I usually work every Sunday morning, I wanted to go to some place that only serves brunch one day a week instead of Saturday as well. It was a real treat to do this. Apparently, The Beauty Shop is THE place to go for brunch on Sundays, as the place was packed out the door when we walked up.

The hostess Lindsey greeted us at the door and asked if we had a reservation. Since we did not, as my Type A personality went out the door this weekend, she said it would be about a 45 minute wait. Normally, this would throw me off. I was hungry, and I needed pancakes.

However, I saw the bloody marys out of the corner of my eye, and I knew I would be fine for that 45 minutes. She wrote our name down, and I instantly went to the bar to order three “Bad Boy Bloody Marys”. (I had two people with me. It’s Sunday morning for heavens-sake people.) They were HUGE. Not only that, but they are handmade! The bartender did everything from the tomato juice, au jus, additional sauces, seasoning, and garnishes. No mixes for this place. I have never had a bloody mary quite like this one. It was really sweet, but had a good kick to it as well. I normally order my bloody marys extra spicy, but I didn’t want to be a pain as I saw the bartender was super busy. This one, however, was spicy enough on its own to make me happy. Not to mention, the bartender was super cool. She was quick in making our drinks and even told us we tipped her too much. She gave us back money!

The wait also gave us a chance to soak in the details of the decor, which are unique and eclectic in themselves. The place is designed like an old school beauty shop. It has lot of funky details, including glass brick booths and hair dryer seats, that can keep your attention for quite sometime.

We were sat before we could finish our drinks, which was nice. It didn’t take as long as expected.  Since it was still my birthday weekend, I got to sit in the salon chair. (It doesn’t work. Don’t worry.) We got the menu, and everything looked amazing. This became another one of mine and Erin’s foodie events, except this time Scott came along. Every time we ordered something else, he simply rolled his eyes and looked away.

To start, the three of us split the beignets with a homemade plum sauce, biscuits and gravy, and lemon ricotta pancakes. The beignets were crispy, yet we prefer ours crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. However, the plum sauce made it well worth it. I wish I could bottle it up and take it with me. The biscuits and gravy were creamy and doughy, just like they should be. This is one of Scott’s favorite foods, and he is a biscuits and gravy critic. He approved, so we knew they were good. The Lemon Ricotta pancakes were by far my favorite! Erin and I both took a bite, our eyes got huge, and we just stared at each other for a moment. Sweet, citrusy, light, fluffy, and everything a pancake should be. This is the perfect Spring breakfast item. I went into my own little world for a moment while eating them.

After we split those, we all orderd our entrees. Erin got the seared salmon benedict, which was yummy. The fish wasn’t too strong, so it worked very well for breakfast. Erin loves eggs benedict, so you go to her if you want an expert opinion. Scott ordered the Cinnamon and Banana French Toast. This is his other favorite breakfast food item. We all thought the portion was a little small. Compared to everything else we got, one piece of toast did not seem like a lot. It looked like it should go under the small plates instead of the entrees.

I order the fried chicken and waffle. Yes, you heard me right. As a Southerner, I have always felt a bit ashamed that I have never had chicken and waffles. It seems like one of those old fashioned staples that I had to be familiar with. This was my opportunity. So I went there. All Scott could say over and over again was “My. Girlfriend. Ordered. Chicken and Waffles.”  I must say, it wasn’t all that super compared to the hype it sometimes gets. I got two fried wings, one waffle, and a side of sausage gravy. I first tried pouring syrup over the waffle and eating chicken with it. Then I tried pouring gravy over the chicken and eating the waffle with it. It wasn’t terrible, but it is not an entree I would ever order again I don’t think. I do not know if this is because of the location or the dish, but there are better things out there. I wouldn’t assume it’s the location, because everything else we ordered was great.

After stuffing our faces, Erin and I remembered one of the things that makes The Beauty Shop so great. They have handmade milkshakes in eclectic flavors! How could we not order those while there. Erin tried the Nutella milkshake, which was impossible to be bad. I was curious about the Sherry Fig milkshake. Both were delicious. The Nutella tasted extra sweet and chocolately, like a milkshake should. The Sherry Fig is hard to describes, but it was sweet and creamy for sure! It also had real chunks of fig in it. You would be a little turned off by the name, but I would highly recommend it. It’s different, but its worth it! You will find nothing else like it either.

Other flavors include White Chocolate Blueberry, Olive Oil and Basil, and Orange Macadamia Nut. How can you look at those and not be curious?

Overall, the food is amazing. I have had the dinner menu before, which is equally as good. The braised pork chop and pears entree is a must! This is another one of Karen Carrier’s magical creations, as she also owns do sushi and noodles, Mollie Fontaine Lounge, and Another Roadside Attraction catering. How could you not love a restaurant whose slogan is “Look Good. Eat Good.” The service was a little slow, but they were incredibly busy. I am usually willing to overlook that if the server has a great attitude and is friendly, which ours definitely was. I really appreciate her not calling us “fat” for ordering so much food as well.

The Beauty Shop is a little more expensive than I am willing to spend on an average meal, but it’s good for special occasions or an occasional nice Friday night out. The experience is definitely worth it.

Finally after two and a half hours, Scott rolled his eyes at us for the last time, and we got up to leave, to-go boxes in hand.

Though it does not have much information, you can check out The Beauty Shop website. You can also find more information at American Cuisine, YelpUrbanspoon, or their Google Map page.

The Half Shell February 21, 2011

I will be upfront and say that The Half Shell is one of my go-to restaurants in Memphis. Whenever I cannot figure out where to eat, most of the time I end up here. I was especially craving it when I woke up Saturday morning, so this was my brunch stop of the day. Since it was such a beautiful day, the boyfriend and I rode our bikes to the restaurant. It’s not terribly far away, and we were able to work up an appetite on the way there while burning off the consumed calories on the way back.

Half Shell is a seafood restaurant, with two locations in Memphis: one in East Memphis at the corner of Poplar and Mendenhall and one in Southwind off Winchester. I have never been to the one in Southwind, as I frequent the one is East Memphis. You can enjoy a full seafood menu any day of the week, but they also offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 3pm. They have discounted Bloody Marys and Mimosas and a list of brunch menu items. This is what we went for today.

You walk in, and the place has a great atmosphere. Everything is home-y and dimly lit. There is also a really nice wrap bar that’s pretty inviting. Most of the tables are pretty secluded and tucked away between walls, so you can focus on your company at the table.

We were sat at our table and were quickly greeted by our server Andi. She was nice, helpful, and saw we were there to hang out for a while so she left us alone for most of the meal. (Thanks Andi!) She brought me my Spicy Bloody Mary and Scott his Mimosa. Food-wise, we both ordered eggs benedict. My two favorite brunch menu items at The Half Shell are the shrimp and grits and the Half Shell Benedict. Today, I had the latter. It’s an english muffin, topped with two poached eggs, spinach, crab meat, and bernaise sauce. I got a fruit cup as my side. Scott opted for the Steak Benedict with potatoes (the food picture somehow got deleted off of my camera, but I will find it and post here).

They were both delicious, as always. The egs were poached perfecly and everything blended nicely together. I am also a fan of their fruit cup, because they go beyond the standard Honey Dew/Cantalope combo like most fruit cups. This one also includes pineapple and grapes.

All in all, our brunch cost us around $35.00, which included the 2 benedicts, 2 Bloody Marys, and 1 mimosa. That’s not bad for a steak and seafood brunch.

If you go during non-brunch times, I highly suggest two items, my staples that I order every time. The first is the Baja Seafood Nachos. These are a “large platter of crisp tortilla chips topped with pan-blackened Tilapia, Bay shrimp, shredded King crab meat and melted Del Rio cheese dip. Finished with sliced pickled jalapenos, pico de gallo, chopped green onions and sour cream” (http://www.halfshell-memphis.com/menu.php). They are a bit expensive, but well worth it.

I usually order those, and if I am still hungry after, I opt for the VooDoo Catfish. To make the VooDoo Catfish, Half Shell takes “your choice of entrée, pan blacken it and serve it atop our famous voodoo shrimp stuffing, then drizzle it with a fresh basil beurre blanc. Served with steamed broccoli” (http://www.halfshell-memphis.com/menu.php). They are both amazing!

This experience, just like my others here, was awesome. I will be back soon, and hope you all go to experience it as well.

I talked to another customer about her love for The Half Shell as well:
