Dyer’s May 10, 2012

Get your shocked looks ready.  Up until a couple of weeks ago, I had never been to Dyer’s.  Yes, it’s true.  This mainstay in Memphis, that so many people rave about, has never entered my life.  The 2012 Beale Street Wine Race changed this all for me.  Some friends and I decided to head into Dyer’s that afternoon after a few Call-A-Cabs and beers.  We needed yummy, greasy food.

Surprisingly, the place was close to empty when we arrived.  I didn’t really understand this, as there was a mass amount of people on Beale Street at this time.  There was one server working the whole restaurant.  He was cool and laid back.

His attitude complimented the atmosphere of the place, which was also laid back.  It has a small town diner feel to it, which I liked.

The four of us decided to split 2 burgers and a basket of chili cheese fries.

I am going to say this, knowing I will get backlash from it.  I welcome all opinions, so fire away.

I did not like Dyer’s. At all. I thought it was disgusting. Next to the McDonald’s hamburger, it might be the worst burger I have had.  I normally try not to be so harsh, but I really don’t know what else to say.  I couldn’t taste meat, just charred stuff. The burger was so greasy, it fell apart in my hands. I couldn’t taste anything other than grease. I took one bite, and let it be.  Maybe the ancient aged grease isn’t doing the burger any good.

The chili cheese fries were edible, but nothing fantastic.  I would not order them again either.

Overall, my experience at Dyer’s was sub-par. The service was good. The atmosphere was good.  However, unless the food is edible, I will not return.

Sorry Dyer’s, but I don’t understand why you have such a good wrap around time. I can get better burgers in many places around town.

If you want to learn more about Dyer’s so you can try them out for yourself, check out their website or Facebook page. You can also find more review on Yelp and Urbanspoon.

Dixie Queen March 15, 2012

Dixie Queen is one of those Memphis establishments that brings me back to my childhood.  When I was younger, my mom and I used to go to the Dixie Queen on Mt. Moriah to get a burger, fries, and freeze.  We would eat inside and then head next door where there was a super awesome Putt Putt course.  It had giant replicas of zoo animals, windmills, the whole bit.

I do not frequent Dixie Queen as much any more, but every so often I have to stop in and get my freeze fix.  That is what I had to do recently.  I was in the area and made an instant decision to go through the drive through.  I ordered an orange freeze.

The freezes are just as good as I remember them as a kid.  They are not icy at all, and they are not too liquidy either.  They have that perfect consistency and are bursting with flavor.  I don’t know exactly how to describe what a freeze is.  It’s a lot like a milkshake, but kind of like a smoothie. There is really nothing else like it.  You just need to try it for yourself.

For the record, the burgers and fries are really good for a fast food restaurant.  If you are going to eat fast food, I would definitely opt for this instead of any national burger chain.  The food is especially good at 3:00am on your way home. I found out about their late hours as a young adult and was thrilled.

The staff is usually super friendly too.  They always have smiles on their faces and are willing to chat it up with you.

The only downside: Don’t come here if you are in a hurry.  They will take forever and make you late. Guaranteed. Every time.  There were four cars in front of me at the drive through, and I didn’t leave Dixie Queen for over 15 minutes.  I could have gotten food faster at a sit down restaurant.  However, if you have the time to hang out, it is worth the wait.

From my experience, Dixie Queen is one of those places that is never talked about, but an establishment most Memphis know and love.

Dixie Queen has no website or social media outlets, as they prefer to run old school.  You can check out reviews on Yelp and Urbanspoon.  Also, Memphis Business Journal wrote an article on them in 2003, about their Memphis home base and expansion.

Stuffy’s November 16, 2011

There has been a lot of buzz about Stuffy’s lately, and Seth with BestMemphisBurger.com only had great things to say about it.  With my Groupon in my hand, I marched into the place filled with anticipation of a great meal of a burger stuffed with cheese.

The place was pretty empty when I arrived.  There was only one other table sitting down.  The restaurant is counter service, so Scott and I walked up to the menu to see what we had to choose from.  I was weighing my options, when I saw this poster below.

image

I was immediately sold.  This burger sounded right up my alley.  Scott ordered the original Stuffy, and we decided to split an order of chili fries.

Stuffy’s does not season their burgers, as they want you to be able to taste the freshness of the ground beef.   They really emphasize the freshness and quality of all of their products.  Instead of seasoning, they add flavor with their choices on flavored mayonnaise.  I am never one to order a sandwich or burger with mayo.  I am not a fan, really.  However, this I had to try.  I ordered my Boolah Burger with Lemon Cilantro mayo, and Scott got hot wing and blue cheese.

image

The burgers came to our table, and they looked absolutely huge. I had no idea how I was going to get this burger into my mouth.  I could not wait to try though.

image

image

After finally strategizing on how to eat the burger and finally consuming it, I must say that I was very impressed!  That was a really good burger.  It was thick and juicy.  The flavors were wonderful together.  The bun was perfect. It had a lot of flavor.  The part that impressed me the most was that the burger did not fall apart.  This is a huge risk when compiling such a burger: you risk having contents spilling over the edges or the bun falling to pieces.  I experienced none of this at Stuffy’s.

They accidentally gave us fries on the side of our burgers along with the chili fries, so we did the best we could to eat as much as possible.  (Scott succeeded way more than I did.)  The fries were good also.  They had the skin on them, like I prefer.  To me, they are not my favorite in the world, but they were decent enough to order again.

image

We went into Stuffy’s with no intention of ordering dessert.  However, after seeing these cupcakes, we could not resist.  Stuffy’s gets their sweets from All American Sweets, a local bakery in Memphis.  We were familiar with the place and love their pumpkin cake, so we had to give this a shot.  We ordered the Dulce De Leche Cupcake to split.  Since the cupcakes had been sitting out on the counter all day, the cake was a little dry and stale.  However, overall it was still good.

image

In addition to great burgers, I want to add that the staff at Stuffy’s is so incredibly nice.  The guys behind the counter were extremely friendly and accommodating.  We chatted away a bit before our food came out.  They were awesome.  Even if the food was not spectacular, I would give them another change due to the great attitudes of the staff.

I only wish they were open later.  Stuffy’s closes after the main dinner rush, around 9pm.  It think this place would be great as a late night joint.  They have the perfect location, right smack in the middle of the campus area.

Overall, I had a great experience at Stuff’y's.  Excellent burgers and excellent service make great for return business, and they will definitely have mine.

For more information on Stuffy’s, visit their website or Facebook page.  You can also find more reviews at Yelp and Urbanspoon.  There have also been some great write-ups about Stuffy’s by Memphis Magazine, The Memphis Flyer, and WMCTV5.

Slider Inn September 23, 2011

There has been a lot of buzz about Slider Inn lately, so I was excited to check it out when a group of friends and I went there after a wedding  recently. It was the Saturday night after Cooper Young festival, so I was a little bit nervous showing up and expecting to get a table for 10-15 people. However, we were lucky enough to not have to wait longer than 20 minutes.

We all got seated and orders drinks from our server Lauren, who was super sweet and very good at her job. I was excited to see that they had Yazoo beer on their list, so that is what I ordered.

I also ordered the sliders while I was there. I had heard great things about the lobster roll. However, my wallet is a little sad, and I could not justify spending $16.00 on a lobster roll. I wanted to try a few of the sliders by getting their deal where I can mix and match three sliders. However, they were not serving this, along with half of their menu, due to Cooper Young Fest. This irked me a little bit. Mainly because the restaurant was not shoulder to shoulder packed. All the seats were full, but it did not seem crazy.

Therefore, I settled for the mushroom swiss sliders, because I was really craving a burger. My friend Rhea ordered the traditional sliders with mayo, ketchup, and pickle, so I traded one of mine for one of hers. This way I can at least try two different ones. The chicken sliders looked awesome, but something in me just wanted a burger. The sliders come with a side of fries and some sort of mayonnaise dipping sauce for them as well.

The burgers were good, but I do not think they were anything to write home about. I know of better burgers in the city. I liked the sourdough bread (though it was a bit cold), and I also liked the thickness of the patties. Everything tasted as it should, but there was just something missing. The fries were delicious, and many people seem to love them. I am more of a steak fry kinda girl, but I could appreciate how good these were.

The main part of my experience that irked me at Slider Inn was the price of liquor. I ordered a shot of Grand Marnier, for which I later found out they charged me ten bucks. I have never in my life paid $10 for a shot, not even at upscale places.

Overall, Slider Inn was fun. They have a great patio with a lively atmosphere. This is the kind of place you go to have a few drinks with a good group of friends on a night with perfect weather. This is exactly what I did. The food is there to soak up the alcohol, but nothing too special. It’s your typical bar food. Stay away from this and the expensive shots, and enjoy your night with a couple of beers and a good crowd.

Silky o’ Sullivans April 30, 2011

Silky ‘o Sullivans is one of many bars and restaurants located on the Historic Beale Street Downtown. Yet, Silky’s is my favorite Beale Street hot spot. It is my “Ole Faithful” of Beale. It always has the best music and atmosphere.

I was there on Saturday, to celebrate the Grizzlies playoff win (Go Grizz!). Scott and I mainly went to hang out on the patio and have a couple drinks. We were a little hungry, so we ordered food as well.

Grizzly Bear on the Silky's Patio

Scott got the nachos and I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich. I know the picture below is of a burger and not chicken, but that is because they ordered me the wrong food. I said I would eat it, because I knew they were really busy and the food took a while to hit the table the first time.

Scott and both agreed the food was very “eh”. It was average. We will probably not order it again, but there was nothing to complain about.

All in all, the food was okay and the service was sub-par. However, these are not the reasons you go to Silky’s. This place is all about having a few drinks and listening to the zydeco band on their patio. Silky’s has the best patio on Beale, maybe in all of Downtown Memphis.

Also, don’t forget to check out the signature goat who is chilling out on the patio as well.

If you are not going to get the Silky’s Ale, brewed by Ghost River especially for Silky’s, then I highly suggest the Diver. This $18.00 beauty is built for a king. Nobody knows what all goes in this, as it is kept a secret. Yet, it is a beautiful mixture of beer, liquor, fruit juice, and “other stuff”. Best part? It comes in a bucket. This means you do not need to order one for yourself. Divers are meant for sharing.

If you go to Silky’s during the day, make sure to ask for Cliff. He is one of my all-time favorite people, and he will take great care of you. If you’re there at night, make sure to say what’s up to Hooper. He’s the manager, and he has a hard job. Let him know he’s doing it well.

Patrick’s Steaks and Spirits April 23, 2011

Patrick’s Steak and Spirits has been established in Memphis for many years. Yet, I had never even heard of it until a couple years ago. I have been a few times to meet friends for Wednesday Night Trivia, but I never stayed long and never ate. I finally decided to give the place a complete try a couple of days ago.

Monday night I was in a celebratory mood, as I had just successfully defended my Master’s project (!!). Erin and I decided to meet up at Patrick’s, so I could both cure my aching appetite and toast to my final step toward graduation.

It was a Monday night around 8:30, so the place was not very busy. Since the weather was beautiful, we headed out to the patio to join a handful of other tables. We sit down and begin chatting, until we noticed it had been about ten minutes. We look around, and a nice guy finally came over to take our drink order. We both got Killian’s, because it’s a happy hour special. FYI: If you’re in the restaurant industry, you get happy hour discounts all day every day.

He drops our drinks back off and introduces another lady across the patio as our server. We thank him and continue our conversation. After about 30 or 40 minutes, my stomach lets out a loud grumble, and I am getting a little antsy to order food. I wave my server down, ask her if I can get some food, and she casually says she will be right back with me. She comes back quickly and takes my order. Erin and I, once again, continue to sip our drinks and catch up. After about 20 minutes, the original nice guy comes back with our food and asks if we need anything. We both ask him for silverware, and he says he will be right back.

We wait a good 5 or 10 minutes for him to come back, but he never shows. My stomach continues to growl and my food is getting cold. I decided to go inside and get utensils myself. I look for our official server as I am walking to the bucket of rolled napkins, but I never spot her. The nice guy, however, was busy washing black mats in the back of the restaurant. I sigh and walk back out. He does return a few minutes later with a hurried look and silverware in his hand.

We eat and talk some more. Then, we finishing eating and talk some more. Then, eventually, over half an hour later, we stop talking and look around for our server. I am finally able to flag her down, and we ask for our check. We were surprised when she was back to our table in less than a minute with our tabs. Apparently she was really ready to get out of there. We leave enough cash on the table to not need change (no telling how long that would take), and we get up to leave. I spot our server out of the corner of my eye talking to friends at a table, and she stares at me the whole time I leave. No goodbye or have a good night, or even a “screw you” look. Just a stare.

Now, I am not a hard person to please as a restaurant patron. Usually I just want to kick back with a beer and some food, relax, and enjoy my company. If you are truly trying and always have a good attitude as a server, I am content. However, with this experience, our official server never had a good attitude. There was never an apology or acknowledgement at all of anything taking a long time. It just seemed like they did not care.

All of this being said, the food was delicious. What the service lacked, the food almost made up for. I ordered a sausage and cheese plate for the two of us to split. I love sausage and cheese plates, and this one did not disappoint. With cheddar, pepperjack, and swiss cheese, amongst all of the fixings, I was satisfied. The only thing I could complain about is that their plate does not come with crackers. I prefer having club or saltine crackers to eat my sausage and cheese plates with.

With the sausage and cheese plate, I also ordered the Brie Burger and curly fries. The burger comes medium rare, just like I like it, with brie cheese stuffed right in the middle of the burger. This means that when you take your first bite, the cheese oozes over the whole burger and causes a huge mess. It’s awesome. After two bites, all of the contents of the burger began slipping apart. I ended up having to use a fork and knife to eat my burger. I have never eaten a burger with a fork and knife. I don’t know if this is a compliment to the food or if should earn the “Toolbag of the Year” award, but I am going to go with the first. The fries were super crispy and amazing as well. Erin polished off most of them, but I had enough to know I approved.

Overall, my Patrick’s experience was a bust. As my previous restaurant manager always said, “People come for the food. They come back for the service.” This is true to an extent. I can find equally good comfort food elsewhere, especially if they have better service. However, since Patrick’s is a local restaurant with good food, I would be willing to give them another chance. I will most likely be back to have a drink of Wednesday nights, but I am debating on staying for a whole meal or more than one drink.

To their credit, Patrick’s is fully involved in their community. They participate in Zoo Rendezvous and Polar Bear Plunge every year. Mike Miller, the owner of the restaurant, is also the President of the Memphis Restaurant Association. That should give them some credit.

I will also say that I know Patrick’s has at least a couple cool servers. I have had several good conversations with one of the bartenders, and my friend Matty C works there as well. He is always cool.

If you want more opinions than just my own, you can visit Patrick’s on Urbanspoon and Yelp. You can also find Patrick’s on their website (where you can find their menu), Facebook, and Twitter. Check them out on Google Maps as well.

Courthouse Deli April 22, 2011

I had never heard of The Courthouse Deli before Tuesday, but I was very grateful for stumbling upon it. Scott, his friend Casey, and I were downtown for the Food Truck Fare when we discovered this place. It is less than one block south of Court Square on North Main Street in a strip mall.

After walking around the Food Truck Fare, we wandered down Main Street trying to find a restaurant to satisfy our hunger. (If you remember, the food trucks were already almost sold out of everything.)

We saw this place and instantly were curious. We walk inside the tiny place and get in line. The menu has your every day burgers and sandwiches, but they also have a Cajun list as well. As much as we all love Cajun food, we stuck to the sandwiches. We were already in the mood for food truck cuisine, so this fell along those lines. Scott and Casey got a burger and fries, and I settled for the Blackened Chicken Sandwich. The guys ordered fries, but I didn’t. The gentleman cooking all of the food was super nice and apparently didn’t want me to feel left out, so he gave me fries on the side anyway.

There is no dining space inside, so patrons have the option on sitting outside on the plastic patio tables or taking their food to go. We choose to sit down. It was a beautiful day, and we wanted to enjoy it. Scott and Casey said their burgers were pretty good. However, my chicken sandwich was awesome. It was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. It seems that, more often than not, these hole-in-the-wall, diner-like places seem to have the best food. This place fit along those lines.

Overall, this place has a super-friendly staff and good food. If I was downtown more frequently during the day, I would be back. This place mainly caters to the business lunch crowd, as they are only open until 3pm every day.

For more information on The Courthouse Deli, visit their Google Maps page. You can also find them on Yelp and Urbanspoon.

The Racquet Club Bar and Grill February 20, 2011

I had tickets Wednesday night to the Big Shots tennis tournament at The Racquet Club of Memphis. Despite the fact that my future boyfriend Andy Roddick was not playing that night, I still managed to have a great time. Since I do not get the opportunity every day to waltz into the The Racquet Club, I thought tonight would be perfect to try out their bar and grill. Normally, this place is off-limits to members only of the club. However, during this week-long tennis tournament, the gates to the club are open. You have free rein around the club, but only require a ticket to get into the actual tennis court. After watching most of the first match, the boyfriend (the real one, not Andy) and I decided we were hungry enough to leave and check out the scene.

Walking inside, The Racquet Club Bar and Grill looked like your average restaurant. It was a little more upscale, with dim lighting and candles, but still seemed very relaxed. The place was packed, since the tournament was in full swing. Most of the tables were empty, as the crowd had surrounded the bar area. Not being ones to miss a piece of the action, we opted to take a seat at the bar.

We both ordered drinks, a glass of Pinot Noir for me and a margarita for Scott, and checked out the menu. Everything listed looked pretty run-of-the-mill also: burger, chicken tenders, cobb salad, fish sandwich, etc.

We decided to go above and beyond, so we ordered the chicken pesto pasta. It looked pretty good as it came toward us at the bar, then I noticed something. Why does this pasta look all alfredo-ey but doesn’t seem to have any pesto? Our first bites confirmed this. It tasted very similar to a boxed Pasta Alfredo kit you by from the corner Walgreens. This is not to say it tasted horrible, but it was very average at best. We were happy that we decided to split something, instead of ordering two entrees.

Overall, it seems as though the club has a lot to concentrate on, so it seems understandable that all of the planning and focus cannot be on the restaurant inside. It is simply there for convenience. People do not go The Racquet Club to eat. They go to play tennis and meet for drinks, and the food is there as a supplement. We will probably not be back to The Racquet Club Bar and Grill, but hey, we will probably not be back to The Racquet Club period.
