R.P. Billiards July 17, 2012

R.P. Billiards is another one of those college hangouts that I actually never hung out in while I was in college. I had been to R.P. Billiards only once before my most recent time, and that is when one of my graduate school classes decided we wanted beer while we learned. Therefore, it was a good experience.

R.P. Billiards has never really been on my radar, but it was suggested by my friend Charlotte one night. Charlotte was in town from Germany, staying around the campus area with no car, so I agreed to meet her somewhere within walking distance.

Though we were meeting for drinks, I was ravenous when I got there. I could tell the bartender saw that look in my eye, and she was on the ball. She was very sweet and great at her job. Charlotte and I were there to catch up, and she knew it. She checked on us every now and then, but really left us to our own. My drink was never empty, and I left full and satisfied.

Charlotte ordered cheese fries, which were waffle fries smothered in cheddar cheese and bacon, served with ranch dressing and sour cream. It’s impossible to mess up fried potatoes with cheese, bacon,  and ranch dressing, and R.P. Billiards had some decent cheese fries. They are not my favorite in town, but they were yummy.

As tempting as those cheese fries were, I erred on the more health conscious side with a blackened tuna sandwich. I did not know it came with fries, but I munched on a few of those as well. You know, for “research”. The tuna sandwich  was great. The tuna was juicy, with great seasonings. The remolaude was perfectly sweet and tangy. They aren’t shy with it as well. This sandwich is a mess to eat, but totally worth it. I took a couple of bites of the sandwich, and between the sauces, flaky tuna, and toppings, it crumbled before my eyes. I gave up and ended up eating with a fork and knife. The fries were average fries, but the season them well, making them unique. They were crispy and crunchy.

I try to shy away from college hangouts, as that time in my life has passed. R.P. Billiards is not my place of choice to go for a drink. However, I think their food is overlooked by most. Yes, it’s mainly greasy bar food. Yet, the quality of some items will shock you. I recommend dropping in and seeing what they are all about. They stay busy during the school year, but it is way less crowded during summer and winter breaks.

R.P. Billiards does not have a website or social media presence, but you can find more reviews at Yelp, Urbanspoon, and Trip Advisor.

Folk’s Folly Prime Steakhouse February 23, 2012

Folk’s Folly Prime Steakhouse is consistently voted “Best Steak” by several reader’s polls across town, every year.  No doubt too, there is a reason behind it.  Growing up, I knew that Folk’s Folly was the magical place that only grown-ups could go to, and only when it was a very special occasion.  In fact, I still feel this way today.

Folk’s Folly is where we decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, and I had been looking forward to it for forever.  Since it was Valentine’s, I was not allowed to take pictures on this adventure.  I crowdsourced a few photos, but sorry for the lack of evidence.

To start the evening, we were treated to a private dining room: one single table in a small room, shut out from the rest of the world by curtains.  It was fantastic, and also the most romantic atmosphere I have ever experienced.  Our server Retha helped us pick out the perfect bottle of wine and listed off our specials.

As an appetizer, we chose the crab cakes.  They were delicate, lightly fried, and complimented with the perfect remolaude sauce.

After we finished our crab cakes, we decided to split a 14 ounce filet minion, small lobster tail, spinach casserole, and twice baked potato.

Photo compliments of Thomas from Eat Local Memphis

The steak was cooked a perfect medium rare, cooked enough on the outside yet juicy and full of flavor.  The lobster tail was buttery (and made me feel very high class).  The twice-baked potato was perfect, with a great mix of butter, cheese, bacon, and chives.  The spinach casserole made me say outloud, “Oh my God, that is so amazing.”

After dinner, we went to the bar for dessert.  We both ordered a Folk’s Folly Freeze, which is ice-cream mixed with your liqueur of choice.  Scott got a Brandy Alexander freeze, and I ordered one with Godiva and amaretto.  They were heaven!

I had absolutely no qualms with any part of my experience at Folk’s Folly.  Romantic atmosphere.  Great wine. Perfect service.  Perfect food.

Folk’s Folly is fine dining, which means the great experience comes with a hefty price tag.  This is the reason a special occasion is usually necessary.  (Also, we had a gift card.)  However, compared to many fine dining or steak restaurants, they are reasonable.  Our whole bill, excluding dessert, cost around $150.00.  That includes the bottle of nice wine, appetizer, steak, lobster, and two sides.  Their steak and drink prices are significantly cheaper than Ruth’s Chris.

For more information, visit Folk’s Folly’s website or Facebook page.  You can also find their menu on All Menus.  For more reviews, check Yelp or Urbanspoon.

Cosmic Coconut February 1, 2012

After four unsuccessful attempts at trying out Cosmic Coconut, I finally was able to hit it up at a time when they were open.  This week has had such great weather, that I just had to celebrate with a smoothie.  I pull up to the Cosmic Coconut, and it already looks enticing.  From the outside of their building, you can tell they are fun.

I walk into the store, and the place looks even neater on the inside.  They have their own fun little goodies to sell.

They even grow their own wheatgrass!

This is one of the main factors that drew me to Cosmic Coconut.  They are all natural, all organic, all vegan, and gluten-free.  They are also Project Green Fork certified! They exist to promote better health, and they are delicious in the process.

Cosmic Coconut has many options for you to choose from, all of which they list on their giant chalkboards on one side of the restaurant.  Do you want juice? a smoothie? something else? Take your pick.

I opted for the Memphis Blues smoothie, which contains banana, blueberry, apple juice, and coconut milk.  It sounded authentic, and made me feel good about supporting my city.  I also added a B-12 booster as well, because I was feeling a little sluggish.

The price tag on the smoothie was a little hefty, at over $7.00 for a medium.  However, I did not expect it to be cheap when they use only high-quality ingredients.

The smoothie was awesome, as expected.  No one ingredient overpowered the other, and the apple juice and banana mellowed out the tartness of the blueberry.

My only main complain about this place is their hours: 8am – 6pm, Monday through Saturday.  Every time I have tried to go prior has either been on a Sunday, or after 6pm.

I cannot afford to go back frequently, but Cosmic Coconut will see my face again!

For more information, you can visit their website, Facebook page, or Twitter.  For more reviews, you can check out Yelp or Urbanspoon.  You can also find more write-ups about this place from many different online sites: I Love Memphis, Memphis Flyer, Dining with Monkeys, East Memphis Moms, and Memphis Daily News.

Las Delicias January 22, 2012

Las Delicias is a family owned and run mexican restaurant in East Memphis.  It’s great food, relaxed atmosphere, smiling faces are trying very hard to win that spot of “Favorite Mexican Restaurant” in my heart.

I have been to Las Delicias a handful of times, and I have never had a bad experience.  It has become my go-to mexican joint in town.  First, they have the absolute best guacamole in the city.  It is made fresh to order for everyone.  Unlike most places where it is a solid green goop, their guacamole is chunks of fresh avocado, tomato, onion, and cilantro.  They serve it with their chips, which are hands down the best tortilla chips in the city.  Thick, crispy, buttery, flaky, and always hot, they can never disappoint.  If this does not convince you, many local groceries and stores, like Miss Cordelias, have started selling their chips and guac.  That means something, right?

They also have killer margaritas.  I do not know what they put in their standard margarita to make it better than most, but they do something for sure.  I could suck down 8 of these, if you let me (please don’t).  If you are not incredibly hungry, I highly suggest stopping by here at least for a margarita and some guacamole as a snack.

This time, Scott and I stopped in for a full-on dinner.  We got chips and salsa to start, as is typical with every mexican restaurant.  The chips were “delicias”, as always.  The salsa is sweet with a hint of kick.

Then we, of course, ordered guacamole.  Scott got a margarita, which he let me sip on a little.

For his dinner, Scott ordered the Fajitas Alambre, which is “Grilled steak, green pepper, onion, bacon and cheese with 7 small corn tortillas”.  They were full of flavor, and I love that the tortillas are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.  It makes them easier to load up, and overall, you get a better filling-to-tortilla ratio.

I ordered a pork tamale, chicken tamale, rice, and beans.  I knew I was not going to be able to eat it all, but I was anxious to have leftovers for lunch the next day.  Las Delicias has awesome tamales, and I order at least one every time I go.  They have a thick layer of masa, which is always very moist.  The beans are typical refried beans, but they have freshly grated cheese on top.  The rice is very fancy is display and very moist in texture.  It is also full of flavor.

Overall, Las Delicias is a guaranteed great meal.  I have never had anything I did not like.  The chips, guacamole, and margaritas are enough to make a consistent customer.  All of the extra yumminess is just a bonus.  Another bonus? The incredibly cheap prices.  You can dine on a budget with no sweat.  If you have never been there, you need to go. Right now.  Seriously, they do not close until 9pm, so you have plenty of time.

Las Delicias does not have any official website or social media pages.  However, you can find reviews at Yelp, Urbanspoon, and Trip Advisor.  You can find their menu on Marks Menus.  To prove me right even more, you can find more awesome write-ups from I Love Memphis, Dining With Monkeys, and The Memphis Flyer.

Memphis Pizza Cafe December 2, 2011

Memphis Pizza Cafe has been a staple in my life for as long as I can remember.  When I was really young, and living in East Memphis, my parents and I frequented the location on Park Avenue.  When we moved to the suburbs, the one in Germantown became our home.  Then, we moved to Arlington, and the location that made a brief appearance in Wolfchase was our spot.  Now that I am living back in the city, I go back and forth between the Midtown location and East Memphis location.  When visiting family in Collierville, I check out that location as well. I have, at some point in my life, settled into every Memphis Pizza Cafe location (with the exception of Southaven), just like I have settled into every home.

This time I ate Memphis Pizza Cafe, it was take-out, so I cannot comment on service.  However, from my past experiences, the service seems to always be pretty solid (taking into consideration how long it takes to cook a pizza). I also love the laid back atmosphere of the restaurants. It’s very homey and comfortable.

I usually order the exact same thing every time I go: a side salad with Ranch dressing (they have great Ranch), and one or two slices (depending on how hungry I am) on Ultimate Cheese pizza, add spinach, tomato, and cajun chicken. This is the ultimate slice of pizza.  With years of experience and trial-and-error under my belt, I finally found the perfect slice of pizza at Pizza Cafe.  This is it.

However, this time I was sharing with the masses, so I did not get to order what I want.  We ordered a Meat Lovers and a BBQ Chicken pizza.  I prefer either no meat or only chicken on my pizza, so I opted to eat the latter.  The BBQ Chicken pizza was great.  It wasn’t my typical order, but I have never had anything bad at Memphis Pizza Cafe.  Partially,  I believe, is because I love their thin crusts.  If I had to compromise again, I would opt for this.

They are always perfectly crispy, with the right amount of sauce, cheese, and toppings.  Memphis Pizza Cafe, in my opinion, is the best pizza joint in Memphis.  I know many that agree with me.  In fact, I have only ever talked to one person who didn’t care for this place.  I also discredit her opinion, as she is a New York-er with a pretentious taste in pizza.  Nothing can satisfy her anyway.  Personally, I have never had a bad experience at any location. Ever.

If you ever have a craving for pizza, I highly recommend trying this place out.

Stuffy’s November 16, 2011

There has been a lot of buzz about Stuffy’s lately, and Seth with BestMemphisBurger.com only had great things to say about it.  With my Groupon in my hand, I marched into the place filled with anticipation of a great meal of a burger stuffed with cheese.

The place was pretty empty when I arrived.  There was only one other table sitting down.  The restaurant is counter service, so Scott and I walked up to the menu to see what we had to choose from.  I was weighing my options, when I saw this poster below.

image

I was immediately sold.  This burger sounded right up my alley.  Scott ordered the original Stuffy, and we decided to split an order of chili fries.

Stuffy’s does not season their burgers, as they want you to be able to taste the freshness of the ground beef.   They really emphasize the freshness and quality of all of their products.  Instead of seasoning, they add flavor with their choices on flavored mayonnaise.  I am never one to order a sandwich or burger with mayo.  I am not a fan, really.  However, this I had to try.  I ordered my Boolah Burger with Lemon Cilantro mayo, and Scott got hot wing and blue cheese.

image

The burgers came to our table, and they looked absolutely huge. I had no idea how I was going to get this burger into my mouth.  I could not wait to try though.

image

image

After finally strategizing on how to eat the burger and finally consuming it, I must say that I was very impressed!  That was a really good burger.  It was thick and juicy.  The flavors were wonderful together.  The bun was perfect. It had a lot of flavor.  The part that impressed me the most was that the burger did not fall apart.  This is a huge risk when compiling such a burger: you risk having contents spilling over the edges or the bun falling to pieces.  I experienced none of this at Stuffy’s.

They accidentally gave us fries on the side of our burgers along with the chili fries, so we did the best we could to eat as much as possible.  (Scott succeeded way more than I did.)  The fries were good also.  They had the skin on them, like I prefer.  To me, they are not my favorite in the world, but they were decent enough to order again.

image

We went into Stuffy’s with no intention of ordering dessert.  However, after seeing these cupcakes, we could not resist.  Stuffy’s gets their sweets from All American Sweets, a local bakery in Memphis.  We were familiar with the place and love their pumpkin cake, so we had to give this a shot.  We ordered the Dulce De Leche Cupcake to split.  Since the cupcakes had been sitting out on the counter all day, the cake was a little dry and stale.  However, overall it was still good.

image

In addition to great burgers, I want to add that the staff at Stuffy’s is so incredibly nice.  The guys behind the counter were extremely friendly and accommodating.  We chatted away a bit before our food came out.  They were awesome.  Even if the food was not spectacular, I would give them another change due to the great attitudes of the staff.

I only wish they were open later.  Stuffy’s closes after the main dinner rush, around 9pm.  It think this place would be great as a late night joint.  They have the perfect location, right smack in the middle of the campus area.

Overall, I had a great experience at Stuff’y's.  Excellent burgers and excellent service make great for return business, and they will definitely have mine.

For more information on Stuffy’s, visit their website or Facebook page.  You can also find more reviews at Yelp and Urbanspoon.  There have also been some great write-ups about Stuffy’s by Memphis Magazine, The Memphis Flyer, and WMCTV5.

High Point Pizza May 30, 2011

I went to High Point Pizza once a couple weeks ago, and I went back for more the exact same week. Part of it was due to the fact that I live close by, and it was really convenient at the time. The other part of it is due to their solid pizza.

High Point Pizza is counter service, where you take a number and go sit down. They have a few tables inside and just as many outside. The patio is set up on the sidewalk of the High Point strip, which is perfect for a beautiful day.

This first visit, I ordered a cajun chicken pizza. The pizza was great, but the best part was the garlicy, buttery crust. It’s perfect. My main qualm with pizzas is the quantity of grease resonating off of the pie. High Point has just enough grease for flavor, but not enough to complain about. I did not have to take a napkin to the top of every slice, so I was happy.

The second time I came in, I got the supreme. I am not much for meaty pizzas (chicken or veggie please), but this one was pretty good. I probably won’t order it again, since its not something I prefer, but it was not terrible.

The beer selection is very minimal, but they have a few domestics and a few from overseas. Nothing special. This place is mainly an in-and-out kinda place, where you do not sit back and enjoy a whole meal for a long period of time.

Overall, High Point Pizza is worth taking a trip out to. Bring the kids too, as its a kid friendly spot. Also, just like Cheffie’s, it is just right off the Greenline. Ride your bike to and from, so you can burn off some of that pepperoni!

For more on High Point Pizza, visit their website or Facebook. You can also find more reviews on Urbanspoon, Yelp, or Google Maps.

Patrick’s Steaks and Spirits April 23, 2011

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Patrick’s Steak and Spirits has been established in Memphis for many years. Yet, I had never even heard of it until a couple years ago. I have been a few times to meet friends for Wednesday Night Trivia, but I never stayed long and never ate. I finally decided to give the place a complete try a couple of days ago.

Monday night I was in a celebratory mood, as I had just successfully defended my Master’s project (!!). Erin and I decided to meet up at Patrick’s, so I could both cure my aching appetite and toast to my final step toward graduation.

It was a Monday night around 8:30, so the place was not very busy. Since the weather was beautiful, we headed out to the patio to join a handful of other tables. We sit down and begin chatting, until we noticed it had been about ten minutes. We look around, and a nice guy finally came over to take our drink order. We both got Killian’s, because it’s a happy hour special. FYI: If you’re in the restaurant industry, you get happy hour discounts all day every day.

He drops our drinks back off and introduces another lady across the patio as our server. We thank him and continue our conversation. After about 30 or 40 minutes, my stomach lets out a loud grumble, and I am getting a little antsy to order food. I wave my server down, ask her if I can get some food, and she casually says she will be right back with me. She comes back quickly and takes my order. Erin and I, once again, continue to sip our drinks and catch up. After about 20 minutes, the original nice guy comes back with our food and asks if we need anything. We both ask him for silverware, and he says he will be right back.

We wait a good 5 or 10 minutes for him to come back, but he never shows. My stomach continues to growl and my food is getting cold. I decided to go inside and get utensils myself. I look for our official server as I am walking to the bucket of rolled napkins, but I never spot her. The nice guy, however, was busy washing black mats in the back of the restaurant. I sigh and walk back out. He does return a few minutes later with a hurried look and silverware in his hand.

We eat and talk some more. Then, we finishing eating and talk some more. Then, eventually, over half an hour later, we stop talking and look around for our server. I am finally able to flag her down, and we ask for our check. We were surprised when she was back to our table in less than a minute with our tabs. Apparently she was really ready to get out of there. We leave enough cash on the table to not need change (no telling how long that would take), and we get up to leave. I spot our server out of the corner of my eye talking to friends at a table, and she stares at me the whole time I leave. No goodbye or have a good night, or even a “screw you” look. Just a stare.

Now, I am not a hard person to please as a restaurant patron. Usually I just want to kick back with a beer and some food, relax, and enjoy my company. If you are truly trying and always have a good attitude as a server, I am content. However, with this experience, our official server never had a good attitude. There was never an apology or acknowledgement at all of anything taking a long time. It just seemed like they did not care.

All of this being said, the food was delicious. What the service lacked, the food almost made up for. I ordered a sausage and cheese plate for the two of us to split. I love sausage and cheese plates, and this one did not disappoint. With cheddar, pepperjack, and swiss cheese, amongst all of the fixings, I was satisfied. The only thing I could complain about is that their plate does not come with crackers. I prefer having club or saltine crackers to eat my sausage and cheese plates with.

With the sausage and cheese plate, I also ordered the Brie Burger and curly fries. The burger comes medium rare, just like I like it, with brie cheese stuffed right in the middle of the burger. This means that when you take your first bite, the cheese oozes over the whole burger and causes a huge mess. It’s awesome. After two bites, all of the contents of the burger began slipping apart. I ended up having to use a fork and knife to eat my burger. I have never eaten a burger with a fork and knife. I don’t know if this is a compliment to the food or if should earn the “Toolbag of the Year” award, but I am going to go with the first. The fries were super crispy and amazing as well. Erin polished off most of them, but I had enough to know I approved.

Overall, my Patrick’s experience was a bust. As my previous restaurant manager always said, “People come for the food. They come back for the service.” This is true to an extent. I can find equally good comfort food elsewhere, especially if they have better service. However, since Patrick’s is a local restaurant with good food, I would be willing to give them another chance. I will most likely be back to have a drink of Wednesday nights, but I am debating on staying for a whole meal or more than one drink.

To their credit, Patrick’s is fully involved in their community. They participate in Zoo Rendezvous and Polar Bear Plunge every year. Mike Miller, the owner of the restaurant, is also the President of the Memphis Restaurant Association. That should give them some credit.

I will also say that I know Patrick’s has at least a couple cool servers. I have had several good conversations with one of the bartenders, and my friend Matty C works there as well. He is always cool.

If you want more opinions than just my own, you can visit Patrick’s on Urbanspoon and Yelp. You can also find Patrick’s on their website (where you can find their menu), Facebook, and Twitter. Check them out on Google Maps as well.
