Memphis Foodie

Your tool for delicious, local cuisine right in the heart of Memphis, TN.

About Me February 7, 2011

Hello everyone! My name is Shannon Little, and I am a recently-graduated graduate student at The University of Memphis, located in the vibrant Memphis, TN. I just completed my Master of Arts in Communication. I focused my interests in Public Relations and Community Relations, and I am really interested in the conversation between an organization and its public.

I just finished my year long Master’s project, which is creating a Community Awareness Campaign for Memphis Heritage. Memphis Heritage is a local nonprofit, activist organization which seeks to save and restore historical buildings in the city. My focus was on their work in the redevelopment of the Overton Square district.

Now that school is over, I wait tables for a local bar and grill in Memphis. I also help them with Marketing and Public Relations as well. I am currently seeking full-time employment in the Marketing/PR/Digital Promotional fields, so please contact me. You can also check out my professional website for more information on me and my professional life.

Memphis is my hometown, the place I was born and raised for most of my life. I also really enjoy discovering new music and going to see live music. I love traveling and exploring new places.  I am a foodie and wine-o at heart. I love my two beautiful dogs, a Corgi named Sadie and a Golden Retriever named Maggie. I am also way too emotionally involved in the University of Memphis Men’s Basketball team. Go Tigers!

Hey, found your blog linked off of Urban Spoon. I moved to Memphis a while ago and can’t find a decent Mexican breakfast joint.

    Any ideas?

    • I honestly do not know any off the top of my head. I am ashamed to say I don’t think I have ever had a Mexican breakfast in Memphis! However, I will ask around and do some research. Give me a day, and I will get back to you!

      • Have you ever tried Taqueria La Guadalupana? This is my ALL TIME favorite Mexican restaurant in Memphis. Everything is delicious and as authentic as it gets.

I have never been there for breakfast, and really did not know until now they served it. I might see you there, as I am now anxious to try it as well. 🙂

They are in East Memphis on Summer.

Haven’t tried that. Will put it on my Sunday list as they open at 8:00 am then.

Only Mexican places I’ve been here (and only moved here a few months ago from out West) are La Chapultapec as we were hitting a movie next door and it was okay, but not great.

Been to Swanky’s but I don’t really consider that Mexican. More of an upscale Cafe Rio (which I don’t think are out East).

Also been to El Meccal in Germantown. This place gets jammed on the weekends and it’s solid but not spectacular.

Heard good things about El Porton but not been there yet. Looking forward to trying Guadalupana.

        Thanks for the info!

      • I wouldn’t consider Swanky’s Mexican either. I term it “Tex Mex”. El Porton is pretty good.

I would highly recommend Las Delicias on Park Avenue. They have great tamales! Rio Loco Downtown on Union is pretty good as well.

Happy Mexican has great margaritas, but I don’t know about their food. However, I would avoid My Favorite Place in Cordova. I’m not a fan.

Thanks for asking around. I cruised up Summer Ave and saw lots of Mexican joints, but none were open early for breaky. I’m going to try Macon road too.

He doesn’t serve breakfast, but check out Mexican Deli Chivas on Hacks Cross Road, south of Bill Morris Parkway. Behind Chowtime.

Great guy, great food at a awesome price. Their sandwiches are excellent.

    Hello Shannon! Digging your site.

My name is Rev and I am helping Roxy’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese Truck from Boston( . They will be in Memphis, TN this weekend as part of the Food Network’s “Great Food Truck Race” Season 2 (

They just came from Manhattan, KS (before that Denver, Salt Lake City & Las Vegas) Where they are stomping out the competition. Check out this thread on yelp from the Denver stop (

I am reaching out to you to see if your site might be interested in an interview or perhaps getting involved with a promo and or event. We were able to team up with KMKF K-Rock 101.5, Manhattan Broadcasting and a few other media outlets in Manhattan and run some exclusive promos for their audience which ended up being a whole lot of fun for everyone involved.

Additionally, we are also looking for the following:
    1. Prep kitchens
    2. Catering gigs
    3. Gourmet Cheese Shops
    4. Restaurants & Grocery Stores who can help source food items
    5. Locations and events to park and serve at especially parties, outdoor events, charities, parties, concerts, anything with a lot of hungry people who want to be on the Food Network!

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Thank you

    • Hey Mike!

Sorry I have not gotten in touch with you yet. It has been a CRAZY week. I talked to Dave Tuesday night and he only had great things to say about Rizzo’s. I would love to come down and check it out. I will be in touch in the next few days.
